What does the Olympic symbol mean?
The Inukshuk, which means "likeness of person" was first used by the Inuit People to mark trails, indicate caches of food, locate nearby settlements as well as good places to hunt or fish. Most of the Canadian arctic is dominated year round by permafrost and only has a few natural landmarks which could be used for orientation, that's why Inukshuk are used as directional markers.

Obama's Historic Speech to America's Students!

President Barrack Obama will address the nation's students on
September 8, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. PST.

The speech will air on C-SPAN cable network, stream on the White House website and air live on C-SPAN Radio (90.1 FM in Washington, D.C., and channel 132 on XM Satellite Radio).

Be advised that Technology Services recommends that you do not attempt to stream the speech live from the internet- you WILL be disappointed!

If you wish to view the speech after the live stream I will create a stand-alone video file that you can play from your teacher computer at a later date so you and your students may view without the buffering issues.

VIDEO CONTEST OPPORTUNITY
The Dept. of Ed. is launching the “I Am What I Learn” video contest geared towards students 13 and over. Beginning September 8, students will be able to upload their responses to the presidents challenge – what steps will they take to improve their education and what role will education play in fulfilling their dreams? They will have until October 8 to post their videos on YouTube, where a panel of judges that will include U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, will review the top 20 finalists. Three winners will each receive a $1,000 cash prize.

Mistakes are Tools for Learning was a huge banner I had hanging in my 3rd grade classroom many years ago. Whenever one of my students made a mistake and was down on themselves, I just pointed to the banner.

This past week I had the opportunity to work with about 40 of AUSD's innovative teachers. I will get to my main point in a minute but I want to explain what was so unique about this group of people.

One of our administrators asked if they were all high school teachers. Not a chance. They were a perfect mix of of elementary, middle, high school educators, ELD and SpED.

The Director of Technology and myself put this innovative group of educators through the ringer! We exposed them to more Web 2.0 resources than any human should be allowed to endure in five days! Here's the thing...they took it all in...struggled, made mistakes, helped one another and created blogs, Animoto videos, Voicethreads, Google Docs, iGoogle, Jott, Jott to blog, Jott to Google Calendar all this and much more. Lots of "mistakes" and lots of "learning" too!

I just listened to a conversation between Yong Zhao, Professor at Michigan State University, and Julie Duffield of Infinite Thinking Machine at the NCTI Conference website. Yong speaks to the importance of innovation, how technology is defining new talents, and why we all should embrace change.

Yong believes that we need to teach our students:

ability to design
to tell stories
to feel empathetic
organize to lead
how to create avatars
navigate Second Life or other virtual worlds
to put multimedia together

Yong expresses the importance that educators understand the "critical" point in education that we are in. ...Give it a listen

Are We Preparing Our Students for the World in Which They Will Live and Learn?

Mathew Johnson an Educator from Pennsylvania created "When I Grow Up". This short video asks the question of educators worldwide: "Are we preparing our students for the world they will live and learn?"

I believe there are pockets of educators who have realized that we've got to re-think how we educate our students. These educators get the idea that our students are "powering down" to come to school. I'm hopeful that our district will soon realize that we have to take a look at just how we create engaging learning environments for our students.
New research from the Metri Group states that multimedia can improve learning .
We can't continue to wish away the "technology" use in the classrooms.
And look at this...there may be hope after all: The Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) is "launching a new leadership initiative aimed at giving superintendents the tools and resources they need to understand the transformative role of educational technology, as well as to lay out a blueprint for technology leadership and action."
Empowering the 21^st Century Superintendent, aims at providing district leaders with the skills they need to lead effective ed-tech programs, strengthen school district leadership and communication, infuse 21^st-century skills into the curriculum, create engaging learning environments, support professional development, and improve assessment.
Maybe our students will stand a chance of competing in this "Flat World!"

Student Internet Safety : What's your approach?

After having a conversation about student internet use and safety with my Innovative Educators during our last Blogs and Wikis training I came across this timely blog entry from Vinnie Vrotny.
Vrotny suggests that we stop teaching our students using negative messages of what not to do on the internet, but instead teach them how to think about the consequences of their actions.
Vrontny has recognized that our students are active in all aspects of the web from social networks, gaming to YouTube and beyond. He proposes that we ask them a series of questions that have the potential to make our students "think before they post."

Vrotny's questions:

If people were to Google you, what conclusions would they make?

From observing your on-line communication, what kind of person would they believe you are? What type of thinker are you? What skills do they think that you have?

From looking at your digital self, would people think that you are full of creativity or are you a copy-cat, mimicking the works of others without any new original thought?

What do you do if your work is being misappropriated? What if you discover that there are images of you on other’s sites which are unflattering or potentially damaging?
What's your approach to teaching your students about their safety and presence on the internet?

Create Your Own Cyber-bookshelf with Lookybook

Mill Valley illustrator Craig Frazier has released a beta version of his children's book site, www.lookybook.com. Lookybook helps educators and parents make informed consumer choices about picture books by allowing users to "click" through illustrated pages and peruse a title in its entirety.
Books are listed by author and illustrator as well as by subject. The latter category is quite extensive with links to titles about living things, concepts, holidays, issues and behavior, academic subjects and cultural diversity.
Idea: Create a class bookshelf. Lookybook is interactive allowing readers to leave comments.

In my quest to find engaging web 2.0 products that can be used in the classroom I came across Bookr. Bookr is a tool to create illustrated books with flickr photos.
Below is an example of a book I created in less than 5 minutes using photos from a field trip with high school juniors and their third grade buddies!
